Co-Trimoxazole 120mg / 240mg / Syrup 480mg / 960mg
Pharmacological Class:
Sulfur based antibiotic.
Indications:
Treatment & Prevention of Pneumocystis jivoreci
Treatment of nocardiosis
Use in AECB
UTIs
Prevention of opportunistic infections in immunocompromised patients.
Treatment of Toxoplasmosis.
Dosage: Adults: 960mg – 2.88g daily in 2 divided doses depending on the severity of the disease.
Children: 18mg/Kg body weight daily in 2 divided doses
NB// Higher doses of 120mg/Kg body weight daily given in 2 – 4 divided doses for 14 – 21 days in the treatment of Pneumocystis Carinii jivoreci.
Prophylaxis of PCP: 960mg PO daily and may be reduced to 480mg daily to improve tolerance or 960mg daily on alternate days.
Children: 6wks – 5mns: 120mg BD for 3 consecutive days or 7 days per week.
6mns – 5yrs: 240mg
6yrs – 12yrs: 480mg
Side Effects:
- GIT disturbances
- Nausea & vomiting
- Kernicterus in newborns
- Skin rash.
